Red Bluff, Corning and the Rest of Tehama County
Tehama County sits between the bigger markets of Redding and Chico, and its lifting work reflects that in-between position. A large Walmart distribution center south of Red Bluff anchors a logistics strip along I-5. The Sacramento River runs through the middle of the county and feeds two major canals through a federal pumping plant. Out east, the foothills climb toward Lassen Peak; out west, rangeland and the Coast Range. Operators here tend to be generalists who might set rooftop units one week and pull a pump the next. Our online courses are built for that: study at your own pace for the national certification that matches the crane you run.

The river job that changed Red Bluff
For decades the Red Bluff Diversion Dam backed up the Sacramento River each summer to feed the Tehama-Colusa and Corning canals, and it blocked salmon in the process. The Bureau of Reclamation replaced its function with the Red Bluff Pumping Plant and Fish Screen, finished in August 2012. The facility includes a flat-plate screen about 1,118 feet long and was designed for up to 2,500 cubic feet per second, starting at 2,000 with room to add pumps.
Construction on that scale is not happening every year, but the plant still needs service lifts on pumps, motors and screen components, and the Tehama-Colusa Canal Authority runs it for Reclamation. Water and power contractors on federal or district facilities will want to see paperwork for operators and riggers before work starts.
Who in Tehama County actually runs cranes?
- Warehouse and logistics construction: tilt-up panels, roof steel and rack systems along I-5
- Orchard and processing operations: hullers, dryers and storage around Corning and Los Molinos
- Utility contractors: pole setting and line rebuilds on the long rural distribution circuits in the foothills
- Equipment service: field mechanics with truck-mounted cranes handling heavy components
- Steel erectors and mechanical contractors: new commercial buildings and HVAC changeouts in Red Bluff
A note on federal land in the east county
Part of Lassen Volcanic National Park lies in Tehama County. National parks are among the places where federal OSHA, not Cal/OSHA, oversees private employers, so a contractor working inside the park boundary falls under the federal Subpart CC rules rather than Title 8. In practice the certification itself is the same national credential; what changes is which agency would inspect the job.
Everywhere else in the county, California's own rules apply. The state's version is stricter than most: operators of mobile and tower cranes must carry an accredited certificate for that crane type, and every crane over three tons needs an annual inspection by a Cal/OSHA-licensed certifier. You will find the full picture in our requirements page.
Planning lifts in valley heat and north wind
Red Bluff is one of the hottest towns in the state in July and August. Heat cuts into crew endurance, softens asphalt under outrigger pads and can push hydraulic systems hard on long lifts. In fall and spring, strong north winds can sweep down the valley with little warning, and much of the county is open ground with nothing to slow them. Good lift planning starts with the wind limits in your crane's manual and an honest look at the load's surface area.
If you are new to load charts, start with mobile crane operator prep. If you already hold a card that is coming due, the recertification course is a faster refresher.
Questions people ask
Is there a Red Bluff or Tehama County crane license?
No. Neither the city nor the county issues one, and California does not either. Employers look for an accredited, crane-type-specific certificate.
Does the distribution center need certified crane operators?
Forklifts and warehouse equipment are a different category. Cranes used in building or expanding facilities, or overhead cranes in maintenance shops, have their own requirements. Ask the employer which equipment the role involves.
How long should I give myself to prepare?
It depends on how much load-chart and rigging work you already do. Experienced hands often move through a course quickly; newer operators should plan on more time with practice questions before booking a written exam.
Do orchard and huller jobs around Corning count toward experience?
Seat time on a crane is seat time, as long as it is documented. Keep a simple log of the crane type, hours and kinds of lifts. It helps when an employer evaluates you, and it matters later when you recertify.
