Crane Exam Prep for Redding and the Upper Sacramento Valley

Redding sits where the Sacramento River leaves the mountains and the valley floor begins, and the work here reflects both. Cranes set bridge girders on Interstate 5, swing trusses on homes rebuilt after the 2018 Carr Fire, and lift equipment around the big federal dams just upstream. Summer afternoons regularly push past 100°F. Our self-paced online course helps operators, riggers and signal persons in the north state get ready for the written exams of nationally accredited crane certifications, studying on any device between shifts instead of driving 160 miles to Sacramento for a classroom.

Heat is the first hazard on a Redding lift

Average afternoon highs at the Redding airport sit near 100°F through July, and the record jumped to 119°F on July 6, 2024, during a month that logged 13 days above 110. That kind of heat matters on a crane. Hydraulic oil thins and runs hotter, engines work against cooling limits, outrigger pads can sink into softened asphalt, and steel loads get too hot to handle without gloves. People fade too: a signal person who has been standing on a slab since noon is not as sharp at 4 p.m. as at 7 a.m.

Crews that do this well start early, schedule critical picks for the cool hours, rotate spotters and keep water at the operator's cab. Our course material on pre-use inspection, ground conditions and the operator's manual is where those habits connect to exam content.

Projects that bring cranes to Shasta County

Timber is the other constant. Sierra Pacific Industries, one of the largest lumber producers in the country, runs its operations from the Redding area, and sawmills, biomass plants and log yards all need lifting and rigging support.

  • Interstate 5 widening. Caltrans and the Shasta Regional Transportation Agency added a third lane each way between Redding and Anderson, a job that began in 2019 and widened or replaced about ten bridge structures, including the South Anderson Railroad Overhead.
  • Carr Fire recovery. The July 2018 fire burned more than 200,000 acres, killed eight people and destroyed over a thousand homes on Redding's west side and in Keswick and Shasta. Rebuilding has kept boom trucks and small mobile cranes busy setting trusses, panels and modular units.
  • Shasta Dam. As of March 2026 the federal government had put $40 million toward planning and preconstruction for raising the dam. Construction has not been confirmed and the plan is contested, so treat it as a possibility rather than a schedule.
  • Win-River relocation. The Redding Rancheria won federal approval to move its casino to the 232-acre Strawberry Fields site south of South Bonnyview Road, with plans for a larger casino, a 250-room hotel and a parking structure. Check current status before counting on it.

What California expects from the person in the seat

There is no state crane license card to apply for. What Title 8 asks instead is a certificate from an accredited certifying body that matches the crane type you run, earned through a written test, a hands-on practical and a medical and drug screen. Our California requirements guide walks through the details. Larger cranes working here also need an annual inspection by a Cal/OSHA-licensed crane certifier, which is a separate requirement from the operator's card.

For most Redding crews the starting point is the mobile crane operator course. Utility and tree-service outfits that run boom-mounted derricks should look at digger derrick prep, and anyone directing a blind pick on a rebuilt lot should study for signal person qualification.

Questions people ask

Where do Redding candidates usually take exams?

Written exams can often be taken through online proctoring or at a test center. The practical exam has to be done on a real crane at a practical test site, and north state candidates commonly travel toward the Sacramento Valley for one. Schedule both directly with the certifying body.

I mostly run a boom truck setting trusses. Do I need certification?

It depends on the machine's boom length, capacity and how it is used. Some smaller cranes fall under exemptions, but training and qualification still apply. Read the exemption list in our requirements guide and check with your employer.

Can a whole crew enroll at once?

Yes. Contractors can enroll several people together through the enrollment form, and an enrollment advisor will reply.

Does the online course replace the hands-on exam?

No. The course prepares you for the written portion with practice questions and exam-style study. The practical is a separate test taken in person.
