Chico Crews: Get Ready for Your Crane Certification Exams

Chico is the largest city in Butte County and the working hub for a stretch of the north valley that grows walnuts, almonds and rice, brews beer on an industrial scale and is still rebuilding a town lost to fire. Fifteen miles up the ridge, Paradise has spent years replacing homes destroyed in 2018, and much of that labor and equipment comes out of Chico yards. If you set steel, hang tanks, rig mechanical units or signal for any of it, this course lets you prepare for accredited certification exams at your own pace, on a phone or laptop, around the harvest and construction calendar.

Where the lifts are

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. started in Chico in 1980 with a hand-built brewhouse and has grown into one of the city's biggest employers. Breweries mean fermentation tanks, silos and process equipment that arrive on trucks and have to be set inside tight buildings, which is rigging and crane work of a very particular kind.

Enloe Medical Center, a nonprofit hospital with close to 300 beds and one of two Level II trauma centers north of Sacramento, keeps renovation and upgrade work moving. Rooftop air handlers, generators and imaging equipment are classic picks for a mid-size hydraulic crane.

Chico State dedicated its $101 million, 110,200-square-foot science replacement building in 2021 and followed it with a net-zero Behavioral and Social Sciences building on the site of the old Physical Science Building. Campus jobs mean working around students, trees and narrow access roads.

Rebuilding after the Camp Fire

The November 2018 Camp Fire killed 85 people and destroyed roughly 11,000 homes in Paradise. Rebuilding has been slow and uneven, but thousands of homes have gone back up, state funding has backed hundreds of affordable rental units, and the town has worked to bury its overhead power lines. Ridge lots are steep, access roads are narrow, and many new homes use roof trusses or prefabricated components that are set with a boom truck or a small crane.

Utility undergrounding and fire-hardening work brings digger derricks and line trucks too. If that is your work, the digger derrick course covers the machine-specific exam topics, while articulating crane prep suits crews delivering and placing building materials with knuckle-boom trucks.

Roads, orchards and the valley floor

Highway 99 runs through the middle of town, and both the state and the Butte County Association of Governments have worked on auxiliary lanes and ramps between SR 32 and East 1st Avenue, while the city has widened SR 32 toward Yosemite Drive. Overpass and sound-wall work in a live freeway corridor calls for careful lift planning and clear signaling.

Out in the orchards, nut hulling and drying plants, rice dryers and storage facilities use cranes for equipment installs and maintenance. Valley soils can be soft after winter rain, so mat use and ground assessment come up often. In summer, heat and dust are the bigger concerns.

The California piece in one paragraph

California made accredited operator certification mandatory years before the federal rule caught up, and it is still stricter in places. Operators of mobile and tower cranes need a certificate for their specific crane type, renewed every five years. See the requirements page for exemptions and the recertification question, then pick a course: most Chico operators start with mobile crane prep, and lead riggers often add Rigger Level 2.

Questions people ask

Is this a class I attend in Chico?

No. The course is fully online and self-paced, so you can study at night or on a rainy day off. There is no classroom.

Do Paradise rebuild crews need certified operators?

If the work uses a mobile crane covered by Title 8, yes. Smaller boom trucks may fall under exemptions based on boom length and capacity, but employer training still applies. Check the exemption details before assuming.

How do I sign up a few people from our company?

Use the get-started form and mention how many people you want to enroll. An enrollment advisor replies with next steps.

Does Chico's summer heat matter for exams?

Not for the test itself, but heat affects equipment and people on the job, and inspection and site-condition topics on the written exam connect to it. Plan critical lifts for cooler hours.
