Solano County Crane Crews: Study for Certification Online

Solano County sits where the Bay Area runs out of room and the Central Valley begins. Its lifting work is unusually varied: aircraft hangars and base projects at Travis, shipyard and waterfront history on Mare Island, an industrial waterfront in Benicia, rows of wind turbines in the Montezuma Hills and warehouses and food plants along I-80 in Fairfield, Vacaville and Dixon. Our online courses help operators, riggers and signal persons across the county prepare for accredited certification on their own time.

Travis and the federal line

Travis Air Force Base east of Fairfield is one of the county's largest employers and a busy airlift hub. Hangars, fuel systems and base facilities generate steady crane work for private contractors. Keep in mind that private employers working on a military base answer to federal OSHA, not Cal/OSHA, so site rules and paperwork may differ from the civilian job you came from. Your certification still travels with you.

Waterfront industry in transition

In Benicia, Valero said in April 2025 that it would stop refining there, and trade press reported at the end of April 2026 that the plant, rated at roughly 145,000 barrels per day, had ceased fuel production. Taking apart, cleaning up or repurposing a refinery of that size is heavy-lift work in its own right, so follow local news for what the owner decides. The neighboring Port of Benicia has long been a landing point for imported vehicles.

Across the Carquinez Strait in Vallejo, the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard closed in the 1990s after more than a century of shipbuilding. Commercial ship repair carried on through Mare Island Dry Dock until the company stopped work on December 30, 2025, after a Coast Guard icebreaker contract went to another yard, and it entered bankruptcy in early 2026. Proposals for new shipbuilding in the county have been floated; treat them as plans until construction starts. Remember that ship repair on vessels afloat falls under federal OSHA.

Wind, Delta ground and valley heat

The Montezuma Hills near Rio Vista host large wind farms, and turbine maintenance and repowering bring in big crawler and hydraulic cranes, sometimes in the same gusty conditions the turbines were built to harvest. The steady westerly that pours through the Carquinez Strait into the Delta is one of the most reliable winds in the state, so wind limits and load-chart notes are daily concerns.

East of Fairfield, summer temperatures climb well above the coast, and Delta and slough ground near Suisun Marsh can be soft. Expect mats, careful travel routes and longer setups.

Food and beverage plants are another steady customer. Jelly Belly still produces most of its candy in Fairfield, while Anheuser-Busch's Fairfield brewery was due to close in early 2026, and processing plants around Dixon and Vacaville handle crops from the surrounding farms. Equipment swaps, tank installs and roof units in those plants often happen during short shutdowns, so the crane, rigging and signal crew have to be ready the moment the window opens.

Off the base, California's own rule applies: Title 8 has required accredited, crane-type-specific operator certification since 2005, ahead of the federal deadline. See the requirements guide for exemptions and renewal.

Questions people ask

Is my California certification valid on Travis?

Accredited national certifications are recognized under both federal and state rules. Contractors on base follow federal OSHA, and the base or prime contractor may add its own requirements.

Do wind turbine crane jobs need extra credentials?

Turbine work typically uses large lattice-boom or hydraulic cranes covered by the standard mobile crane certification. Employers may require additional site-specific training.

How far is Solano from practical exam sites?

The county sits between the Bay Area and Sacramento, so many candidates can reach either region. Certifiers post current practical exam dates and locations.

Can I prepare for recertification online?

Yes. The mobile crane recertification course reviews the written content. Whether your logged hours can waive the practical depends on current Title 8 wording and your certifier, so check both.

Does work on Mare Island fall under Cal/OSHA?

Shore-side construction and repair yards on the island are generally Cal/OSHA jobs. Ship repair on a vessel that is afloat is federal OSHA work. Because both can happen on the same waterfront, ask your supervisor which rules govern each task.
