Fairfield and Travis: Crane Certification Prep for Solano County Crews

Fairfield sits where Interstate 80 squeezes between the hills and Suisun Marsh, halfway between the Bay Area and Sacramento. It is Solano County's seat, the home of Travis Air Force Base, and a manufacturing town best known for the Jelly Belly candy factory, which Chicago-based Ferrara has owned since 2023 and still runs here. Anheuser-Busch's big brewery on the city's edge was slated to close in early 2026, and decommissioning or reusing a plant that specialized would be lifting work of its own. Food plants, plus freeway, warehouse and housing projects, create steady demand for crane operators, riggers and signal persons. Our online course lets Fairfield workers prepare for accredited written exams at their own pace, on any device and at any hour.

Who regulates the lift?

This is the first question to ask in Fairfield, because the answer changes at the Travis gate. Private contractors working on a military base generally fall under federal OSHA, not Cal/OSHA, and the base and contract will set their own requirements on top of that. Off base, at a candy or food plant, on a freeway job or at a new warehouse, Cal/OSHA and Title 8 apply.

Under Title 8 there is no state crane license; instead your employer has to see an accredited certificate covering the type of mobile or tower crane you operate, and has to be sure the person signaling is qualified. The requirements guide walks through the details, including exemptions for smaller cranes.

Plant work: candy and food lines

Confectionery and food plants replace cookers, tanks, chillers and packaging lines on a schedule tied to production. That usually means weekend or shutdown-window lifts, often through roof hatches or wall openings, with millwrights and riggers working beside the operator. Sanitary areas and finished floors add restrictions on where outriggers and mats can go.

For those jobs, the knowledge in our Rigger Level II course, covering load calculations, center of gravity and multiple-crane considerations, is as useful as the operator's certificate.

Food-grade plants also expect contractors to follow hygiene and allergen rules, so a crane crew may be asked to clean outrigger pads, wear plant-specified gear and keep lubricants and hydraulic leaks well away from production areas.

Wind out of the Delta

Fairfield is close to the gap where marine air pushes inland toward the Central Valley, and summer afternoons can be very windy here; the Montezuma Hills to the southeast host one of the state's wind-energy areas for that reason. Wind turbines themselves are a crane specialty, involving very large crawler cranes and tall lattice booms, and the same breeze affects ordinary lifts in town.

Check wind at boom-tip height, not just at the cab, and treat flat panels and long steel as sails.

Interchanges, rail and growth

The junction of Interstate 80, Interstate 680 and State Route 12 in Cordelia is one of the region's busiest truck routes, and it has been rebuilt in phases over many years. Freeway and interchange work like that means bridge girders, sign structures and soundwall panels set at night between lane closures, often by operators who are on the job for a few hours and then move on.

On the city's north side, the Fairfield-Vacaville Hannigan rail station opened on the Capitol Corridor line in 2017, and new housing and commercial areas have grown around it. Warehouses and distribution buildings along the I-80 corridor add tilt-up and roof-steel work through the year.

Questions people ask

Do I need a certificate to work on Travis?

Federal OSHA's construction crane rule also requires operator certification, and base contracts often spell out exactly which credentials they accept. Ask the prime contractor before you mobilize.

Is Fairfield closer to Bay Area or Sacramento testing?

It is roughly between them, so you can look at practical test sites in either direction. Written exams are also available through online proctoring.

Can I use the course on my phone?

Yes. The material and practice questions work on phones, tablets and computers, and you can study 24/7.

Does the course guarantee I pass?

No course can promise that. It gives you structured, exam-style preparation; passing depends on your study and the exams themselves.
