Vallejo Crane Crews: From Mare Island Docks to the Carquinez Strait

For more than a century Vallejo's identity was tied to Mare Island Naval Shipyard, the Navy yard across the Napa River that built and repaired ships until it closed in 1996. The island has since been turned toward private industry and housing, and commercial ship repair carried on in the old dry docks for decades, although the main operator, Mare Island Dry Dock, halted work at the end of 2025 after losing a Coast Guard repair contract and sought bankruptcy protection in early 2026. Add the Carquinez Bridge, ferry service to San Francisco and the shoreline along San Pablo Bay, and Vallejo is a city where lifting often happens next to deep water. Our online course helps local operators, riggers and signal persons prepare for accredited certification exams without fitting a class schedule into shipyard or construction hours.

Shipyard lifts and the jurisdiction line

Ship repair at Mare Island has relied on dry docks, wharf cranes, mobile cranes and a great deal of rigging for propellers, shafts, rudders and deck equipment. It also puts crews right at the boundary between two regulators. On shore and on the wharf, Cal/OSHA's Title 8 governs. Work on a vessel afloat in navigable water generally belongs to federal OSHA's shipyard and maritime standards.

A competent rigger is valuable in either setting. Ship components are irregular, centers of gravity are hard to judge and attachment points are not always obvious, so the Rigger Level II course and its focus on load calculation and lift planning fits this work well.

Building next to the water

The 2003 Carquinez Bridge, a suspension span named for ironworker Alfred Zampa, replaced a 1927 cantilever and is a reminder of how much heavy marine construction this stretch of I-80 has seen. Waterfront redevelopment on Mare Island and along the Vallejo shoreline brings similar challenges at smaller scale: pile driving, seawall and pier repair, and building foundations on reclaimed tidal land.

That reclaimed ground can be soft and prone to liquefaction in strong shaking. Plan for mats, verify the bearing capacity and watch for settlement around cribbing during long picks. Wind funnels through the Carquinez Strait on summer afternoons and can catch long or flat loads.

Vallejo's ferry terminal on the Napa River is another waterfront asset that needs periodic float, gangway and pile work, typically done from a barge or the shore with a mobile crane. Tides, current and passing vessels all affect timing, so these lifts are scheduled tightly and planned with the ferry operator.

Your path to certification

California's version of the rule is worth stating plainly: no state agency licenses you, yet Title 8 bars employers from assigning a covered mobile or tower crane to anyone without a current accredited certificate for that type.

  • Pick the crane type. Truck, crawler, boom truck and tower cranes each have their own certification category. The mobile crane operator course covers the most common types.
  • Study for the written exams. Work through the course material and practice questions on your phone or computer.
  • Schedule exams with the certifying body. Written tests can be online-proctored; the practical is hands-on at a practical test site.
  • Keep it current. Certificates last up to five years. Check the California requirements guide for how the state handles recertification, then plan your recertification prep.

Questions people ask

Is Cal Poly Maritime Academy, the former Cal Maritime, related to this course?

No. The Vallejo campus on the Carquinez Strait, which joined Cal Poly in 2025, trains merchant mariners. Our course is online exam preparation for crane, rigging and signal person certifications.

Do I need a signal person certificate to direct crane lifts at the shipyard?

On Cal/OSHA work, Title 8 §5001.3 requires the employer to make sure signal persons are qualified, often through a third-party evaluation. The signal person course prepares you for that.

Does the course cover cranes on barges or pier work?

Floating cranes and barge-mounted operations have their own manufacturer and regulatory considerations beyond the basic exams. The course covers the core knowledge tested for mobile crane certification, including load charts, ground and support conditions, and rigging, which you build on with site-specific training.

How far are exam sites from Vallejo?

Vallejo is within easy reach of the inner Bay Area and the Sacramento region via I-80, so most candidates have several practical test options to choose from.
