Yolo County Crane Operators and Riggers: Exam Prep Online
Rice from Yolo and neighboring counties leaves California through a port most people forget exists. The Port of West Sacramento, at the end of a 30-foot-deep ship channel maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers, ships rice and receives cement, with SSA Marine running the cargo terminal since 2013. That is just one piece of Yolo County's lifting work. UC Davis is constantly building, Woodland's processors run large tomato and seed operations, and the Yolo Bypass and Cache Creek levees need regular attention. Our online courses let crews across the county prepare for national crane exams at their own pace.

Work by place
West Sacramento. Besides the port's bulk and breakbulk terminals, West Sacramento has a dense industrial district along the ship channel and the Sacramento River, plus rapid mixed-use growth facing downtown Sacramento. A local note: as of late 2025, a proposed Enterprise Bridge over the ship channel was in dispute over whether a low design would restrict ships, with port workers' union filing suit. Watch for how that resolves.
Davis. University construction means research labs, residence halls and medical buildings, a mix of tower crane and large hydraulic crane work, with tight campus logistics and lots of pedestrians.
Woodland and the farm belt. Tomato processing, seed companies, rice dryers and grain elevators bring seasonal installation and repair lifts, many done with boom trucks and articulating cranes.
California's operator certificate rule
Instead of a license, California uses a certification mandate. The relevant Title 8 sections require anyone running a covered mobile or tower crane to carry an accredited certificate for that crane type, backed by passed written and practical exams, a physical and a drug test. Five years is the most any certificate lasts. Our requirements guide explains the exemptions for small cranes and the renewal question that Cal/OSHA's standards board has been revisiting.
Riggers and signal persons are covered too: Title 8 section 5001.3 has the employer confirm a signal person's qualification before they direct a crane, and federal rules expect qualified riggers in the fall zone and during assembly.
Bypass, levees and floodplain ground
The Yolo Bypass is a broad floodway that fills during big Sacramento River flood years, and I-80 crosses it on the long Yolo Causeway. Levee repair, bridge work and pump station upgrades put cranes on soft, saturated alluvial soil and narrow levee crowns. Ground-bearing pressure, mat sizing and keeping outriggers back from slopes become central to every lift plan.
Summer brings dry heat and occasional strong north winds through the Sacramento Valley, while the Delta breeze can swing winds around in the late afternoon. Winter means rain, fog and wet access roads.
Raley's, the grocery chain, is headquartered in West Sacramento, and the city's industrial district includes food distribution, manufacturing and building-material yards. That mix produces a steady run of racking, rooftop equipment and dock leveler installations, often handled by small hydraulic cranes and boom trucks working inside fenced yards with limited room to set up.
Recommended starting points
- Mobile crane operator for port, plant and campus jobs
- Rigger Level 1 for anyone hooking loads at the port or in processing plants
- Signal person for campus and port lifts where the operator cannot see the landing
- Tower crane operator if you aim for university or West Sacramento high-rise work
Questions people ask
Do ship-side lifts at the port fall under Cal/OSHA?
Cargo handling aboard ships is generally federal OSHA maritime jurisdiction; shoreside construction and maintenance are usually Cal/OSHA. Ask your employer which applies to your job.
How far is the nearest place to take exams?
Sacramento is right across the river from West Sacramento, and Woodland is about 20 miles away, so most Yolo County candidates test in the Sacramento region. Written exams can also be taken through online proctoring.
I am a farm mechanic with a crane truck. Which course fits?
The service truck crane operator course matches mechanics who use a crane-equipped service body for tires, engines and parts.
Is there a classroom in Davis or Woodland?
No. The courses are fully online and self-paced, open 24/7 on phones, tablets and computers.
