Ukiah Valley Crane Certification Prep

Ukiah sits in a narrow inland valley along Highway 101 and the upper Russian River, about two and a half hours north of San Francisco. It's the county seat and the commercial center for a large, mostly rural county known for vineyards, timber and steep backcountry. Crane work here tends to be practical rather than glamorous: winery tanks, utility poles, bridge repairs, mill equipment and homes rebuilt after wildfire. If that sounds like your week, our online course is a way to prepare for accredited certification exams without driving to the Bay Area for classes.

Vineyards and wineries

Mendocino County grows wine grapes up and down the valley, and wineries need stainless tanks set, presses installed and buildings expanded. Tank sets are a good example of where rigging knowledge matters as much as crane skill: tall, light, thin-walled vessels have to be tilted from horizontal to vertical without damage, often with two cranes or a crane and a tailing device.

That kind of lift belongs in Rigger Level 2, which covers lift planning, load control and more complex rigging arrangements.

Harvest season compresses everything. Equipment installs are planned around crush, when wineries can't afford downtime, so tank sets and building work tend to cluster in spring and early summer. Crews that already hold their certifications and know their rigging are the ones contractors call first when that window opens.

Utilities, fire and hillside rebuilding

Ukiah runs its own electric utility, and PG&E serves much of the surrounding county. Line work in steep, forested terrain keeps digger derricks and line trucks busy, especially after winter storms and during wildfire hardening. Electric line trucks used for pole work may be regulated differently from cranes under Title 8, but crane-type attachments on those trucks are not automatically exempt. The digger derrick course covers the exam side.

Wildfire has hit the county hard. In October 2017 the Redwood Valley fire, part of the Redwood Complex just north of Ukiah, became the deadliest wildfire in the county's recorded history, killing eight people in Redwood Valley and destroying hundreds of buildings. Rebuilding on those ridges often relies on boom trucks and small cranes working on narrow roads and slopes.

Rivers, dams and the highway

  • Lake Mendocino is held back by Coyote Valley Dam, an Army Corps of Engineers structure just northeast of town. Federal facilities can involve federal safety oversight, so confirm the rules before mobilizing.
  • Potter Valley Project. Upstream on the Eel River, PG&E filed with federal regulators in July 2025 to surrender the Potter Valley hydro project and remove Scott and Cape Horn dams. As of 2026 that application was still under FERC environmental review, with the project running on annual licenses. If removal goes ahead, it will bring heavy equipment and lifting into remote country, so check the docket before planning around it.
  • Highway 101 follows the valley and crosses creeks and ridges north and south of town, so bridge and slope repair work is a constant for Caltrans contractors.

California's rule, without the jargon

California has no crane operator license you apply for at a state office. Under Title 8, if you run a covered mobile or tower crane, you need an accredited certificate for that specific type, which comes from passing written and practical exams and meeting medical and drug-test requirements. Our requirements guide explains the exemptions and renewals.

For most Ukiah operators, the mobile crane operator course is the right first step. Utility workers should look at digger derrick prep, and anyone who directs lifts on winery or rebuild jobs can add the signal person course. Everything is self-paced, with practice questions and exam-style prep.

Questions people ask

Where would a Ukiah operator take the practical?

The certifying body schedules practical exams at sites with a real crane. Mendocino County candidates often travel south toward Sonoma County, the Bay Area or Sacramento. Written exams can often be taken online with a proctor.

Is this a good fit for winery maintenance workers?

If you rig or operate during equipment installs, yes. Start with Rigger Level 1 and move on from there.

How do I get started?

Use the enrollment form. The course is self-paced and works on any device.

Does the course apply to the timber and mill side of the county?

Yes. Mills, log yards and biomass plants need rigging and crane work for equipment changes and repairs, and the operator and rigging courses cover the knowledge tested on those exams.

Prep that fits this work

  • Rigger I

Learn to inspect gear, choose and tie the basic hitches and knots, and recognize rigging hazards, the core of the NCCCO Rigger Level I credential that many California employers use to document a qualified rigger.

  • Rigger II

Move from following a rigging plan to building one. This course prepares you for the NCCCO Rigger Level II exams: estimating weight, locating center of gravity, calculating sling tension and choosing gear for level and rotating lifts.

  • Digger Derrick

Get ready for the NCCCO Digger Derrick Operator written exam and understand where California's utility-equipment exemption ends, so you can run pole-setting rigs with a portable credential behind you.

  • Mobile Crane

Online study for the NCCCO mobile crane Core written exam and the LAT, TLL or TSS specialty that matches your machine, framed around how Cal/OSHA actually checks operators on California jobs.
