Building Back in Santa Rosa: Crane Exam Prep for North Bay Crews
In October 2017 the Tubbs Fire crossed US-101 and burned through Santa Rosa's Coffey Park neighborhood, destroying well over a thousand homes there alone. Three years later the Glass Fire burned into the city's eastern edge. The rebuilding that followed changed what lifting looks like here: boom trucks setting roof trusses on block after block, mobile cranes placing modular units and heavier fire-resistant materials, and utility crews replacing poles and lines. Our online course helps Santa Rosa operators, riggers and signal persons prepare for accredited certification exams without driving to a classroom, studying 24/7 on whatever device they carry. The city sits about an hour north of the Golden Gate, so the work here is local, not commuter overflow from San Francisco, and many contractors run crews across the whole county from Petaluma to Healdsburg.

Lessons from the rebuild
A year after the Tubbs Fire only a couple dozen Coffey Park homes were finished and more than 500 were under construction. By late 2020 local reports put about 95 percent of the destroyed homes either finished or under construction, with more than 1,150 replacement houses already occupied. That pace meant many crews setting trusses and materials on tight lots with neighbors moving back in next door, often with a boom truck or small hydraulic crane reaching over fences and new utilities.
Rebuilt homes use sprinklers and fire-rated siding, and some owners chose concrete or steel systems. Heavier materials and tighter schedules make load weights, rigging choices and clear signals matter even on residential jobs that once used only a forklift.
Common lifts around town
Outside the burn areas, Santa Rosa's construction mix looks like a typical regional center, with a few distinctly North Bay jobs added:
- Truss, panel and modular-unit sets on residential infill.
- Rooftop HVAC replacements on commercial buildings and medical offices.
- Tanks, presses and equipment for wineries and food processors in the surrounding county.
- Utility pole and transformer work as lines are hardened against wildfire, often with digger derricks.
- Bridge and culvert work along US-101 and Highway 12.
Ground, smoke and a fault
The Rodgers Creek Fault, the northern continuation of the Hayward Fault system, runs along the east side of the city. New buildings are designed for it, and older ones are retrofitted. On burn-scar lots, debris removal can leave disturbed soil and filled excavations, so check the surface under each outrigger rather than trusting what a neighboring lot did.
Fire season adds its own limits. Hot, dry offshore winds can arrive in the fall, smoke can cut visibility, and red-flag days may restrict hot work. Build those into the plan instead of discovering them on the morning of the pick.
Where the state rule fits
There's no crane license to apply for in Sacramento. California's Title 8 approach is different: an employer must confirm that whoever runs a covered mobile or tower crane has passed an accredited certification for that crane type, with smaller machines and some delivery and utility cranes treated separately. See the California requirements guide before you decide which credential you need.
Questions people ask
I mostly run a boom truck for framing crews. Which course?
Many boom truck operators prepare for a telescopic fixed-cab certification; our mobile crane operator course covers that ground. If you run a knuckle-boom, look at articulating crane operator instead.
Do utility crews need a different course?
Line crews running digger derricks can use the digger derrick operator course. A true crane on a utility truck still requires a certified operator.
How far will I travel for the practical exam?
That depends on the certifying body's schedule. North Bay candidates often look toward the Bay Area or Sacramento region. Written tests are available through online proctoring.
Is modular construction changing crane work here?
Some rebuilt homes and new apartment projects in Sonoma County use factory-built modules or panels. Setting them is a crane job that rewards careful rigging, spreader bars sized to the module, tag lines and clear communication, because the units are large, light for their size and easily damaged. The Rigger Level I course is a good fit for crews doing that work.
