Santa Rosa and the North Bay · Rebuild and wine country

Sonoma County: Prep for Your Crane Certificate Online

Sonoma County crane crews have spent much of the past decade rebuilding. The 2017 Tubbs Fire burned through whole neighborhoods in Santa Rosa, and later fires hit the county again. Alongside that recovery, wineries keep expanding, the Highway 101 corridor keeps getting widened, and the geothermal plants in the Mayacamas Mountains need regular heavy maintenance. If you set trusses, tanks or turbines anywhere from Petaluma to Cloverdale, our self-paced courses can help you get ready for an accredited exam.

What the Tubbs Fire rebuild taught local crews

The Tubbs Fire of October 2017 destroyed thousands of homes in and around Santa Rosa; Coffey Park alone lost roughly 1,300 to 1,500. Rebuilding started slowly: a year in, only a couple of dozen homes there were finished. By about three years later, local officials told Reuters around 80% of the neighborhood's destroyed homes had been rebuilt and occupied.

That pace meant hundreds of homes going up at once, with boom trucks and knuckle-boom cranes delivering trusses and panels street by street. Crews learned to stage carefully around utilities, neighbors already moved back in, and a lot of other trucks. That experience is useful now that the region keeps hardening homes and power lines against future fires.

The same pattern repeated on a smaller scale after the 2020 Glass Fire, which crossed from Napa County into the hills east of Santa Rosa, and after other fires in the county. Local contractors now carry real experience organizing many small lifts across a damaged neighborhood.

Geysers steam fields and winery steel

The Geysers, straddling the Sonoma–Lake county line, is the largest geothermal field in the world, with Calpine operating most of its power plants. Turbine overhauls, pipeline work and cooling tower repairs happen on steep, remote mountain ground with narrow access roads, which demands careful crane placement and good rigging.

Down in the valleys, wineries from the Russian River to the Sonoma Valley add tanks, barrel rooms and processing buildings, and food and beverage plants around Petaluma and Windsor install production equipment. Many of those lifts happen inside or alongside finished buildings.

Petaluma and the 101 corridor have also seen years of highway work through the Marin-Sonoma Narrows, where the freeway was widened with new carpool lanes, and the SMART commuter rail line has added stations and track. Projects like those use cranes for girder sets, sound walls and station canopies, usually in short overnight windows next to live traffic.

Rain, river and ridge

Winter storms can push the Russian River over its banks around Guerneville and Forestville, and saturated hillsides around the county are prone to slides, so crane setups in the rainy season need closer attention to ground. Inland summers are hot, while the coast stays foggy. Highway 101 is the backbone; Highways 12, 116 and 128 are slower and narrower.

One rule does not change with the weather. Title 8 makes California employers put only certified operators on covered mobile and tower cranes, with certificates from an accredited body for each crane type. Check the California requirements guide before you book.

Questions people ask

Is there a Sonoma County or Santa Rosa operator license?

No. Local governments issue building and encroachment permits, but operator qualification comes from the state certification rule.

Do Geysers plants hire certified crane operators?

Plant owners and their contractors set their own requirements, and covered cranes there fall under the same Title 8 certification rule. No course can promise employment.

Can I study during rain delays?

Yes. The course works on a phone, tablet or computer, any hour of the day.

Which course should I take if I only work on residential rebuilds?

Look at your crane's size first. Larger boom trucks and hydraulic cranes need the operator certificate, so start with the matching operator course and add rigging basics. Small delivery units may be exempt, but training still applies.

Are there tower cranes in Sonoma County?

Occasionally, mainly on larger multifamily, hospital or commercial projects in Santa Rosa and Petaluma. Most local lifts use truck-mounted hydraulic cranes and boom trucks. If a tower crane goes up, the employer also needs a Cal/OSHA tower crane permit, and the operator needs a tower crane certificate. The tower crane operator course covers that exam.
