From Ontario to the Mojave: Crane Prep for San Bernardino County
San Bernardino County is the largest county by area in the lower 48 states, and its crane work changes completely once you climb out of the valley. Down in the Inland Empire it is tilt-up warehouses, rooftop units and rail yards around Ontario, Fontana and San Bernardino. Up through the Cajon Pass and out along I-15 and I-40, it is utility-scale energy, a rare-earth mine, two major military installations and, if construction proceeds as planned, a high-speed rail line to Las Vegas. Our online courses fit around long commutes and rotating shifts, so you can study load charts and rigging at night and be ready when your exam date comes.

Warehouse country and the rail yards
The City of Ontario counts more than 120 million square feet of industrial space, and Ontario International Airport moved over 750,000 tons of freight in 2023, ranking among the busiest cargo airports in North America. A few miles east, BNSF's San Bernardino intermodal facility covers about 154 acres and runs 15 overhead cranes to load domestic containers and trailers.
For operators this means a steady flow of tilt-up panel picks, steel erection, HVAC sets and dock equipment installs. Panel crews depend on tight rigging plans and clear signals, which is why many contractors ask hands to hold Rigger Level 2 or signal person qualifications alongside the operator's card.
Brightline West and the I-15 corridor
Brightline West plans a high-speed line from Rancho Cucamonga to the Las Vegas Valley, largely in the I-15 median across the High Desert. Ground broke on the Nevada side in April 2024; the company has said California-side construction was expected to follow, and first service is projected for 2029 as of the latest reporting. If it moves ahead on that timeline, bridge girders, station structures and systems work through Victorville and Barstow will need experienced crane crews. Treat dates as tentative and check current news before planning around them.
Desert work comes with different bosses
- Mountain Pass: MP Materials runs the only rare-earth mine and processing plant in the United States near the Nevada line. On mine property, MSHA, not Cal/OSHA, sets the crane rules, though many mining contractors still prefer certified operators.
- Fort Irwin and Twentynine Palms: the Army's National Training Center and the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center are federal installations, so private contractors on base fall under federal OSHA.
- Everywhere else: private construction and county or city projects stay under Cal/OSHA and Title 8.
Wind, heat and the Cajon Pass
The National Weather Service regularly issues high wind warnings for I-15 through and below the Cajon Pass, and during Santa Ana events gusts near San Bernardino and Fontana can reach 70 mph. Summer days in Barstow and Needles push well past 100 degrees, which affects hydraulic oil, tire pressure and crew endurance. Knowing your manufacturer's wind limits and how to read the chart for a reduced-capacity configuration is real exam material here.
In California, the certificate you need comes from an accredited certifying organization and is tied to the crane type, not to the county; the requirements guide covers the details, including annual inspections by licensed crane certifiers.
Questions people ask
I run a boom truck setting HVAC units on warehouse roofs. Which course fits?
Most fixed-cab boom trucks are covered by the telescopic fixed-cab specialty, which our mobile crane operator course prepares you for. If yours is a knuckle-boom, look at articulating crane operator instead.
Does working at Mountain Pass require NCCCO certification?
MSHA rules govern mine sites and rely on employer training. Some mining employers still ask for national certification because it documents what an operator knows.
How far is it to a practical exam from the High Desert?
Practical exam events are scheduled by certifying bodies and test site operators, often in the Inland Empire or greater Los Angeles. From Victorville that is usually an hour or so down the pass; from Needles or Baker, plan for a long day.
Our crew works both the valley and the High Desert. Can the company enroll everyone together?
Yes. Company and crew enrollment is available, and each person studies at their own pace on their own device, which suits crews split between Fontana tilt-up jobs and desert energy sites. Submit the form on Get Started and an enrollment advisor will reply with options. Each worker still has to pass the written and practical exams individually; the certificate belongs to the operator, not the company.
