Ontario Crane Crews: Get Exam-Ready Around the Airport and the Ranch

In Ontario, much of the crane work traces back to two things: an airport that moves hundreds of thousands of tons of cargo a year, and the former dairy land south of it that has been turning into warehouses, business parks and new neighborhoods. Add a convention center expansion and an arena district downtown, and the city keeps operators, riggers and signal persons busy. Our online course is built for that workforce: self-paced, on any device, preparing you for the written exams of accredited crane certifications.

Air cargo drives the north side

A city business brochure reports that Ontario International Airport handled about 793,370 tons of cargo in 2024, with UPS, FedEx and Amazon as the major carriers. UPS runs a Western Region hub at ONT linked to its main hub in Louisville and has expanded its sorting buildings there. Hubs of that size depend on steel, conveyor systems, rooftop equipment and dock infrastructure that all go in by crane.

Near an airfield, the crane itself can become an obstacle to aircraft. Expect height limits, notice requirements and coordination with airport operations before a boom goes up. Those constraints feed straight into the lift plan, so the operator and the rigging crew need to know them before setup.

Ontario Ranch: from dairies to distribution

The south end of the city, once farmland and dairies, has been rezoned and built out in phases. The city's development brochure lists projects such as the Ontario Ranch Logistics Center, about 2.5 million square feet, along with a multi-million-square-foot business park and a Prologis project that were under construction when it was published. Tilt-up walls, steel roof structures and solar arrays on those buildings are classic mobile crane work.

Former agricultural ground can hide old wells, septic systems and soft spots, so geotechnical reports and compaction testing matter before setting outriggers on new pads.

Solar is a growing piece of the work. Big flat warehouse roofs are prime ground for panel arrays, and getting pallets of modules, racking and inverters onto a roof forty feet up is routine boom-truck and mobile crane work. Those picks are light but numerous, which is exactly when crews start to cut corners on rigging inspection and tag-line use.

Downtown: convention center and arena district

HMC Architects was selected for an Ontario Convention Center expansion planned at about 450,000 square feet of indoor space, a 2,000-vehicle parking structure and a pedestrian bridge over Holt Boulevard, with completion targeted around 2027. Around Toyota Arena, which seats about 11,000, the city has planned an Arena District with new housing and retail. Dates were plans as of 2025; confirm them with the city before relying on them.

Long-span exhibit halls and a bridge over a busy street mean heavy picks, tandem lifts and street closures, the sort of work where a Rigger Level II and an experienced signal person matter.

What California expects of your operators

Ask an Ontario superintendent what paperwork a crane operator needs and the answer is a certificate, not a license. Title 8 calls for an accredited certificate tied to the type of crane being run, and California adopted that requirement years before the federal rule did. The California certification guide has the details. Begin with mobile crane operator prep, and add signal person training for anyone directing loads.

Questions people ask

Do airport tenants follow different crane rules?

Ontario International is a civilian airport, so Cal/OSHA's Title 8 rules apply. Airport and FAA requirements on height and notification apply on top of them.

How long does the course take?

It is self-paced. Some people work through it in a few weeks of evenings; others take longer. There are no set class times.

Does the course cover tilt-up panel rigging?

It covers the rigging principles the exams test, such as center of gravity, sling angles and load control, which underpin tilt-up and steel erection work.

What if I already hold a certificate from another state?

Accredited certifications such as NCCCO are national, so a valid certificate for the right crane type generally meets the California requirement. Your employer still has to train and evaluate you on the equipment you will run. Check expiry dates and the recertification course if renewal is close.

Prep that fits this work

  • Mobile Crane

Online study for the NCCCO mobile crane Core written exam and the LAT, TLL or TSS specialty that matches your machine, framed around how Cal/OSHA actually checks operators on California jobs.

  • Rigger II

Move from following a rigging plan to building one. This course prepares you for the NCCCO Rigger Level II exams: estimating weight, locating center of gravity, calculating sling tension and choosing gear for level and rotating lifts.

  • Signalperson

Study the standard hand signals, voice procedures and crane behavior behind the NCCCO Signalperson credential, and learn how a third-party certificate fits the Option 1 path in California's signal person rule.

  • Rigger I

Learn to inspect gear, choose and tie the basic hitches and knots, and recognize rigging hazards, the core of the NCCCO Rigger Level I credential that many California employers use to document a qualified rigger.

  • Recertification

A self-paced refresher for operators whose NCCCO mobile crane card is nearing its five-year expiration, with a clear look at where California's Title 8 renewal wording differs from the national rule.
