From Chowchilla to Oakhurst
Madera County: Online Prep for Crane Operator Exams
The first piece of permanent high-speed rail structure in California went up in Madera County. Crews began the Fresno River Viaduct outside the city of Madera in 2015, a 1,600-foot bridge over the river and State Route 145 next to the BNSF tracks, and the Authority now lists it as complete. A new passenger station on Avenue 12 is next in line. Around those projects sit almond and pistachio processors, the Madera and Friant canals, Millerton Lake and the climb up Highway 41 to the south gate of Yosemite. Here is how lifting crews in the county can get exam-ready without a classroom.

Questions Madera crews ask first
Do I need a state license? California does not hand out a crane license. What it does, through Title 8, is make an accredited certificate mandatory for operators of covered mobile and tower cranes, and that certificate must name the type of crane you will operate. Our requirements guide spells out the steps and the exemptions for small cranes.
Can I do it all online? You can prepare for the written exam online and take it through the certifying body, but the practical exam is always run on a real crane. Fresno, roughly 25 miles south of Madera, is the usual place to look for test events.
The rail station on Avenue 12
Caltrans and the San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority won a federal grant of about $54.5 million in late 2024 to build the relocated Madera station off Avenue 12, which is designed to serve Amtrak San Joaquins trains now and high-speed trains later. The grant covers platforms, trackwork, overhead contact systems, a bus depot, parking and an access road. Overhead contact system work in particular uses boom trucks and small cranes to set poles and hardware next to active track. Check with the joint powers authority for the current build schedule.
The county's transportation commission has said early high-speed operations between Merced and Bakersfield are expected sometime between 2030 and 2033.
Farm processing and water
- Nut hullers, dryers and processing plants install bins, elevators and dryer sections, often during the short window before harvest.
- Friant Dam, which holds back Millerton Lake on the Fresno County line, feeds the Madera Canal north toward Chowchilla; canal gates, pumps and turnouts need periodic crane work.
- Vineyards and dairies add a steady trickle of boom truck lifts for tanks and equipment.
Foothill terrain changes the lift plan
Above Coarsegold and Oakhurst the county turns steep and forested. Utility poles, water tanks and wildfire-damaged structures in the Sierra foothills are set on slopes where a digger derrick or an articulating crane may be the only machine that fits. Operators here learn to deal with uneven ground, tree clearance, overhead power lines and snow at higher elevations, all of which feature on certification exams.
In the valley, summer heat and winter tule fog are the main weather factors. A good signal person who can run radio signals confidently is worth a lot on a foggy morning pick.
Questions people ask
Which course fits rail electrification work?
Pole and hardware setting usually involves boom trucks and digger derricks, so look at the digger derrick operator and service truck crane operator courses, plus signal person for work near traffic or track.
How long do I have access to the course?
Courses are self-paced and open 24/7 on any device. An enrollment advisor can explain access details when you submit the get started form.
My certificate expires next year. What should I do?
Start studying for recertification now. California's five-year cycle and its practical exam rules differ in detail from the federal ones, so check Title 8 and the certifying body. Our recertification course covers the written portion.
Is crane work inside Yosemite covered by Cal/OSHA?
National parks are federal enclaves, so private contractors working inside the park generally fall under federal OSHA instead of Cal/OSHA. The federal construction crane rule, 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC, also calls for operator certification, and a nationally accredited certificate is accepted under both systems. Work in Oakhurst, Bass Lake or elsewhere outside the park boundary remains under Cal/OSHA.
