Yuba County: Crane Certification Prep That Fits Your Schedule

Marysville is a city ringed by levees at the meeting of the Yuba and Feather rivers, and flood risk explains much of the heavy civil work in Yuba County. Upstream, Yuba Water Agency plans to add a second, gated spillway at New Bullards Bar Dam so it can release water earlier ahead of big storms. Add Beale Air Force Base, gravel and gold operations along the lower Yuba River, and growth around Wheatland and Plumas Lake, and you get a county where operators need more than one kind of crane experience. Our online courses help them prepare for national certification on their own time.

A new spillway in the foothills

Yuba Water's Atmospheric River Control spillway would sit on the left side of New Bullards Bar Dam with an approach channel, a gated control structure, a concrete chute and a discharge channel to the North Yuba River. The State Water Resources Control Board approved its part of the project in June 2026, and environmental documents estimate about four years of construction. Whether construction has started when you read this is worth checking on Yuba Water's site.

Gated spillway construction involves setting radial gates, hoists, rebar cages and formwork on steep rock slopes, typically with large crawler or hydraulic cranes and engineered lift plans. That is advanced work, and Rigger Level 2 is the matching credential for riggers who want it.

Three jurisdictions in one county

  • Cal/OSHA covers most private and local government work, including levee and dam projects.
  • Federal OSHA covers private contractors on Beale Air Force Base, home of high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft. Its crane rule also requires operator certification.
  • MSHA covers aggregate and gold dredging operations in the Yuba Goldfields. Mine crane work follows MSHA rules, although many operators there still carry an accredited certificate.
  • Entertainment and commercial growth near Wheatland, including the Hard Rock casino resort at Fire Mountain and nearby venues, has brought steel erection and large hydraulic crane work under Cal/OSHA or, on tribal land, under arrangements worth confirming with the employer.

Certification under Title 8

California's crane rule focuses on the operator's certificate rather than a government license. Before you run a covered mobile or tower crane on a Cal/OSHA job, you need certification from an accredited body for that crane type, which means passing written and practical exams and meeting medical and drug-test requirements. Our California requirements page explains the exemptions and the five-year renewal.

Marysville is about 40 miles north of Sacramento, where written test centers and practical exam events are most frequent.

River bottoms to snow country

Yuba County runs from valley floodplain at Marysville up into the Sierra foothills around Dobbins and Camptonville. In the valley, expect heat, fog and soft river-bottom soils near the levees. In the hills, roads are narrow and winding, slopes are steep and winter can bring snow at higher elevations, all of which constrain crane size and setup. Utility crews in the foothills often rely on digger derricks and articulating cranes for that reason.

Wildfire risk is part of the foothill picture too, and fire-damaged lines and structures produce rebuild work for line trucks and boom trucks.

Questions people ask

Does certification help if I work at Beale?

Yes. Federal OSHA's construction crane rule requires operator certification, and nationally accredited certificates meet it. The base contractor may have extra requirements.

What about the levee contractors around Marysville?

Levee jobs are under Cal/OSHA, so the Title 8 certificate rule applies to anyone running a covered crane. Riggers and signal persons must also be qualified.

Can I take the courses on my phone?

Yes. The courses work on phones, tablets and computers, are self-paced and are available at any hour.

Do I need to recertify after five years?

Yes. Our recertification course helps you review for the written exam; check current Title 8 wording and your certifying body for the practical exam rules.

Which machines do Englebright and other river structures use?

Work on dams and river structures along the Yuba ranges from large crawler cranes for gates and penstocks to boom trucks for instrumentation and small parts. If you hope to join those jobs, an accredited mobile crane certificate plus rigging training is the usual starting combination.
