Crane Exam Study for Hanford and the Rest of Kings County

Hanford is a farm town at heart, with dairies, cheese plants and row crops stretching out in every direction, but it also sits on two big pieces of infrastructure. High-speed rail crosses the county east of town on viaducts and grade separations, with a Kings/Tulare regional station planned near Highway 198. A few miles west, Naval Air Station Lemoore is the Navy's master jet base on the West Coast. Between farm work, rail work and work on or near the base, Hanford crane operators and riggers see a wide mix of jobs. Our self-paced course prepares them for the written portion of accredited certifications.

Two rulebooks within a few miles

Off base, Kings County is Cal/OSHA territory. There, an operator running a mobile or tower crane needs to hold an accredited certification for that specific crane type, and California never created a separate state license. Cranes above three tons also need annual certification by a state-licensed certifier, a requirement that surprises crews coming from other states. Our requirements guide explains how this works.

On Naval Air Station Lemoore, private contractors fall under federal OSHA instead. The federal Subpart CC rules also require certified operators and qualified signal persons, so the training translates, but inspections, reporting and some details differ. Confirm with the prime contractor before you mobilize.

Rail viaducts across farmland

High-speed rail construction in Kings County includes a viaduct carrying the line over Highway 198 and a string of road overcrossings where county roads climb over the future tracks. Girder sets, precast deck pieces and falsework on these structures were lifted beside farm roads and active fields. That work put a premium on Rigger Level I skills and on operators comfortable with long reaches over obstructions.

Cheese, milk and the plants that make them

Kings County's dairy herds feed large cheese and dairy processing plants in the Lemoore and Hanford area, including Leprino Foods' big Lemoore West mozzarella plant (the company announced that its century-old Lemoore East plant would close in early 2026). Plant work means silos, evaporators, dryers and refrigeration equipment, often lifted onto roofs or through openings with very little margin. Indoors, overhead cranes and hoists carry the load; outdoors, it is hydraulic truck cranes and boom trucks.

Small city, long drives

Hanford crews often travel. A week might start at a dairy near Lemoore, move to a plant in Corcoran and end on a county road project east of town. Long drives on two-lane roads mean less time at home, and less time to sit in a classroom. That is the practical reason many Kings County workers prefer studying online: an hour in the evening, a few practice questions at lunch, and steady progress without giving up a work day to travel to a training site.

When Tulare Lake came back

In 2023 heavy snowmelt refilled much of the old Tulare Lake basin south of Hanford, flooding farmland around Corcoran for months. Levee repairs, pump installations and road rebuilding followed. It was a reminder that the valley floor here is old lakebed: flat, often clay-rich, and capable of turning soft after a wet season. Check ground conditions before every setup.

  • Use crane mats on clay soils after rain or irrigation.
  • Expect tule fog on winter mornings and plan radio signals.
  • Watch heat stress during summer picks above 100 degrees.

Questions people ask

Does federal work at Lemoore need a different certification?

No separate card exists. Federal OSHA also expects operators to be certified by an accredited body, so the same NCCCO certifications are commonly used on and off base.

How far is the nearest larger city?

Visalia is about 20 miles east and Fresno roughly 35 miles north. Written exams can also be taken through online proctoring.

I mostly signal for a crane at a dairy plant. Is there a course for that?

Yes, the signal person course covers hand and voice signals and the crane basics a qualified evaluator expects you to know.

Is a tower crane course useful in Kings County?

Tower cranes are rare here. Most local work uses mobile cranes and boom trucks, so the mobile crane operator course is usually the better starting point.

Prep that fits this work

  • Mobile Crane

Online study for the NCCCO mobile crane Core written exam and the LAT, TLL or TSS specialty that matches your machine, framed around how Cal/OSHA actually checks operators on California jobs.

  • Rigger I

Learn to inspect gear, choose and tie the basic hitches and knots, and recognize rigging hazards, the core of the NCCCO Rigger Level I credential that many California employers use to document a qualified rigger.

  • Signalperson

Study the standard hand signals, voice procedures and crane behavior behind the NCCCO Signalperson credential, and learn how a third-party certificate fits the Option 1 path in California's signal person rule.

  • Service Truck Crane

Exam preparation for the NCCCO service truck crane designation, aimed at field mechanics, tire technicians and fleet crews who run a crane mounted on a service body rather than a full boom truck.
