Monterey County · Salad Bowl of the World
Salinas Valley Crane Certification Study, Built for Ag Country
Salinas calls itself the Salad Bowl of the World, and the label is earned. Monterey County grows a large share of the nation's lettuce, and the valley's packing houses, vacuum coolers, cold storage buildings and processing lines all depend on equipment that someone has to lift, set and service. Taylor Farms, the country's largest fresh-cut salad supplier, keeps its headquarters in downtown Salinas. Add Highway 101, a county hospital and steady commercial work, and there is real demand for certified operators and qualified riggers. This online course lets you prepare for the written exams on your own schedule, which matters when harvest season runs from spring into fall.

Ag-industrial lifting is its own specialty
Lifting in the produce industry rarely involves a skyline of tower cranes. It looks like a hydraulic crane setting a rooftop refrigeration condenser on a cooler, a boom truck placing compressor skids, or a rigging crew moving a processing line inside a plant with forklifts, gantries and chain hoists. Those jobs are often done on tight schedules between shifts so production doesn't stop.
The work rewards people who can calculate a load's center of gravity, choose the right sling angle, and keep a load under control in a building full of workers. That is exactly the material in Rigger Level 1 and Rigger Level 2. Operators setting refrigeration equipment from the street should also look at mobile crane prep.
Wind off the bay and ground on the valley floor
The Salinas Valley opens straight onto Monterey Bay, and on many afternoons the sea breeze pushes up the valley with real force. A crane setting a flat sheet of roofing, a sign or a large panel can find that the load catches wind like a sail. Check your manufacturer's wind limits, watch for gusts rather than averages, and plan big-surface picks for calmer morning hours.
The ground deserves the same attention. Irrigated fields, old ag lots and freshly graded pads can be softer than they look, especially after winter rain. Outrigger mats and a real look at what is underneath are part of every exam's site-setup questions and every good lift plan.
Seismic risk is close by as well. The San Andreas fault runs along the Gabilan Range on the valley's east side, which is one reason structural, hospital and school work in the county follows demanding seismic design.
Hospital, highway and other public work
- Natividad Medical Center, the county hospital, filed plans in 2026 to remodel its emergency department and add about 6,000 square feet. Hospital work means lifting near patients and critical systems.
- U.S. 101 carries freight and commuters through the city, and bridge or interchange work on it brings cranes into live traffic zones.
- Fort Hunter Liggett in southern Monterey County is an Army installation, where private contractors fall under federal OSHA rather than Cal/OSHA.
California's operator certificate rule
Your employer can't simply sign off on you running a covered crane in California. Title 8 requires a certificate from an accredited body, earned crane type by crane type, with written and practical tests and a physical. There is no state-issued crane card. Our requirements guide lays out the steps and the exemptions.
Downtown Salinas and the industrial areas along the highway also see commercial and public building, from offices to schools. Most of those jobs use hydraulic truck cranes or all-terrain cranes for steel, precast and mechanical work. The mobile crane operator course covers load charts, setup and operation for those machines, and it runs on any device whenever you have time.
Questions people ask
I mostly rig inside processing plants. Which course fits?
Start with Rigger Level 1. If you plan lifts or lead a rigging crew, move on to Rigger Level 2. If you also direct crane operators, add the signal person course.
Where would I take the practical exam?
The practical is scheduled through the certifying body at a test site with a real crane. Salinas candidates often look toward the South Bay or other larger metros. Online prep covers the written side only.
Can our company enroll a group of maintenance workers?
Yes. Crew enrollment is available through the enrollment form, and an advisor will follow up.
Is the course available during harvest when I work long hours?
It's self-paced and available 24/7, so you can pause during peak season and pick it back up later.
