Crane Exam Prep for Los Angeles Operators and Riggers

Few cities ask as much of a crane crew in a single week as Los Angeles. One job is a tight downtown pick between occupied buildings, the next is a container-terminal repair in San Pedro, and the one after that is a hillside foundation in Pacific Palisades where the January 2025 fire cleared whole blocks. Our self-paced online course helps operators, riggers and signal persons in the city get ready for the written exams of nationally accredited certifications, studying on a phone or laptop between shifts instead of losing days to a classroom.

Where the lifting happens in LA

  • San Pedro and Wilmington waterfront. The Port of Los Angeles shares San Pedro Bay with Long Beach. Shore-side wharf, rail and yard work brings mobile cranes and heavy rigging; work aboard vessels afloat falls to federal OSHA's maritime rules rather than Cal/OSHA.
  • Pacific Palisades. The 2025 fire left thousands of lots to rebuild. As of early 2026 the city reported well over a thousand rebuilding permits issued, and new homes on steep, narrow streets often depend on boom trucks and small hydraulic cranes for trusses, steel and modular units.
  • LAX. The airport's Landside Access Modernization Program includes the Automated People Mover, which as of spring 2026 was running test trains without passengers after long delays. Airport work means restricted airspace, escorts and strict height limits near runways.
  • Downtown and the Westside. Residential and mixed-use towers keep tower cranes on the skyline, and every one needs a Cal/OSHA tower crane permit before it runs.

Ground, wind and the clock

Much of the basin sits on alluvium, and stretches near the harbor and old river channels are mapped as liquefaction-prone. That matters when an outrigger float lands on fill that looks firm. Read the soils report, use cribbing sized for the actual reactions, and ask when the plan is silent.

In fall and winter, Santa Ana winds can gust hard through passes and canyons and then stop just as suddenly. Coastal jobs fight morning marine layer that hides the boom tip from a signal person standing below. Add rush-hour traffic that limits when oversize loads and assist cranes can move, and LA lift planning becomes as much about timing as about capacity.

What California expects of you

There is no city or state crane card to carry. Under Title 8, a person running a mobile or tower crane needs a current certificate from an accredited certifying body, matched to the kind of crane in use, and employers still have to make sure the operator can actually handle that machine. Our California requirements guide walks through the details, including the annual crane inspections done by Cal/OSHA-licensed certifiers.

Most LA candidates start with mobile crane operator prep. Crews on high-rise sites add tower crane operator, and anyone hooking loads in the fall zone or guiding picks should look at Rigger Level I and signal person.

Rebuilding in the Palisades, lift by lift

Fire rebuilds look like ordinary house construction until the crane arrives. Many Palisades streets are narrow, winding and steep, with retaining walls on one side and a drop on the other. A boom truck may have to set up in the street with a closure permit, reach over a neighbor's lot and land trusses on a foundation built into a slope. Before the first pick, confirm who owns the airspace you'll swing through, where the buried utilities run and what the soils engineer said about the edge of the pad.

Modular and panelized homes have become part of the recovery, and they bring larger mobile cranes into neighborhoods that never had them. Those lifts are heavy, wide and wind-sensitive, and they leave very little room for error at long radius.

Questions people ask

Will the 2028 Olympics mean more crane work in Los Angeles?

Large events tend to bring venue overlays, temporary structures and transit upgrades, but we can't predict specific hiring. Holding the right certification before the work is let simply keeps you eligible when crews are being put together.

Where do Los Angeles candidates take the practical exam?

Practical exams happen at test sites arranged through the certifying body, and the greater LA area usually has several options. Online study covers the written side only; the hands-on test is always taken on a real crane.

I work at the port. Is my job covered by Cal/OSHA or federal OSHA?

It depends on where the work happens. Shore-side and marine construction work generally stays with Cal/OSHA, while longshoring aboard a vessel and ship repair on vessels afloat fall under federal OSHA. Your employer's safety department can confirm which applies to a given task.

Can a company enroll a whole crew?

Yes. Contractors can enroll several people at once through the get started form, and an enrollment advisor replies with the details.

Is online study enough to get certified?

Online study prepares you for the written exams. You also need a physical exam, a substance test and a hands-on practical on the specific crane type before a certificate is issued. Our requirements guide lists each step.
